Building the Best Dog Kennels
Dogs who will spend any amount of time outdoors will need a kennel in which to spend their time. The kennel allows the dog a space of his own and protects him from the elements and other dangers of rural or suburban life. Sometimes you may want a kennel for a dog you keep indoors.
Outdoor dog kennels are composed of a dog house and a dog run. The house should be insulated and roofed. A well-insulated house can let the dog stay outside on all but the coldest or hottest of days. The kennel's run should provide areas to give the animal food and water and give him space to exercise when you cannot be there to walk your dog.
Dog kennels need a door to let the animal come and go, even if you plan to keep the dog in the kennel most of the time. Complex locks may not be required depending on the breed. If the dog is small or the breed is not noted for amazing acts of escape artistry as some of the larger hound breeds are known to do.
The run for a dog kennel will require a small amount of fencing. The runs for many dog kennels does not need to be roofed, nor is it a good idea to do so. Putting roofs on dog kennels can make some dog breeds uneasy.
Dog kennels give your dog a place to call his own and dog kennels give the owner a place to keep his dog when he cannot give his pet the attention that he requires. The owner should remember that even though the dog kennels can keep his pet relatively comfortable in most weather conditions, there may be days when he needs to bring the most outdoors oriented dogs inside his home to keep the animal warm or cold.
