The Use of Light Dog Kennels in Housebreaking
Housebreaking a puppy can be a breeze if you know the ropes. Most dog trainers will agree that unarguably, the most successful puppy housebreaking methods include the use of light dog kennels, or portable dog kennels. Dog trainers use the word "crating" the puppy, which means putting the puppy in a crate, or kennel.
Puppies, and adult dogs for that matter, find security in their routines and in their understood territory. Housebreaking dogs is best accomplished with the use of light dog kennels and well-established schedules. Basically, the crating rule of thumb is this: If you cannot keep a watchful eye on your dog and his activities, then he should be in the kennel, as corrections must be made during the misbehavior. The kennel should be only large enough for the dog to stand up and turn around. It should not be so large as to allow the animal to soil one end of the kennel and sleep in the other. Keep this in mind when you are shopping around for light dog kennels. You will want to break your kennel down and take it with you, whenever you must travel with your dog.
Ideally, you will need to schedule "potty breaks" throughout the day, especially within 10 minutes of your dog eating and/or drinking. These outside walks need to be fairly consistent in your timing. Animals thrive on expected routines, and learn acceptable behavior from those events.
When shopping for light dog kennels, think of the size of your pet and the portability of the kennel, to make outings easier if you have a need to travel.
Finally, just remember three important rules: kennel your dog whenever you cannot see what he is doing, stick to an established schedule for his doggie bathroom breaks, and praise his good behaviors.
