Owning a portable dog kennel is almost a necessity if you own a dog. They can be used for any number of things, including securing your dog in the car, when traveling and sometimes at your own home, because many counties and states now require kennels if you own a dog.
Purchasing your portable dog kennel might be an easier task than you imagine. You can buy a mesh kennel if you only plan to travel by car with your dog, you can buy a portable metal kennel that's easily installed and taken apart, or you can buy a hard heavy duty plastic portable dog kennel with a small metal door at the front. These are the ones you've probably seen most commonly.
You should choose a portable dog kennel that allows your dog enough room to move around in. Anything too large and your dog might use the kennel as a backyard; in other words, he or she might poop or pee in it. But you don't want one so small that your dog can't stand up and walk around in a circle in it. Usually the tags on portable dog kennels will provide ideas about which kennel to buy based on your dog's size, weight and breed.
Depending on how you're using your portable dog kennel, make it sure it allows you a method for providing your dog with fresh water and that you can figure out a method for keeping food in the kennel if the dog will be in there long enough to need food. You can put a nylon panel over the top of the kennel; especially if you're traveling, this will prevent people from being able to look in or put things into the kennel.
